Each year as we delve into Autumn, Halloween seems to become a bigger and bigger event taking the UK by storm. After all it’s a great excuse for children, teenagers and even adults to have some crazy fun at a potentially dreary time of year as the winter nights draw in! Whilst many of us attend fancy dress parties or simply stuff ourselves with sweets, how many know the origins of this Autumnal festival as it grows in popularity?
How did Halloween originate?
Each year Halloween falls on the 31st October due to the ancient Gaelic Festival of Samhain. Many believed that, not only was this time of year a transition between seasons, but also when the boundary between this world and the next became particularly thin enabling them to connect with the dead! It is this belief in connecting with the dead that gave rise to spooky, ghostly connotations which always form part of Halloween celebrations. It is thought that early pagan celebrations at this time would have been highly ritualistic with the inclusion of dressing up in costumes. Later a move towards Christianity saw Halloween continue but traditions began to evolve.
Trick or treating is thought to have begun when children dressed as saints would go door to door reciting songs or verses and receive ‘soul cakes’ (a special type of biscuit). Modern trick or treating, where children collect sweets door to door in exchange for householders becoming immune from Halloween pranks, evolved in the US during the mid-1900s before spreading to the UK.
