Flowers are always a popular gift for Mums on Mother’s Day – who doesn’t love to receive some fresh, colourful and sweet scented flowers? From a single flower to a bunch of seasonal daffodils or an elaborate arrangement, Mother’s day falls during spring when a huge choice of blooms starts to emerge.

Popular Varieties

To begin our journey of flower inspiration, we look at six of the most popular Mother’s Day flowers.

Roses – Red, pink, yellow or white roses are a classic choice for Mother’s Day because they symbolise love and gratitude. Classic choices include Hybrid Tea Roses which are perfect for bouquets due to their large high-centred blooms and long stems. Meanwhile miniature roses can often be found in pots making them easy to gift, care for and place around the home.

Carnations – Pink carnations are traditionally associated with Mother’s Day and said to represent a mother’s love. Standard Carnations have a ruffled appearance whilst Spray Carnations have multiple blooms on each stem making them a great addition to flower arrangements. Both types of carnation come in wide range of colours useful when coordinating a bouquet, as well as having a reputation for good longevity.

Tulips – A popular choice for Mother’s Day symbolising perfect love, tulips come in a range of colours as well as open and closed flower heads.

Lilies – White lilies are often associated with motherhood hence making them another frequent choice for Mother’s Day. Not only that, lilies come in a number of different varieties each with large stunning blooms that make a real impact. They are generally used as part of an arrangement alongside other types of flower.

Daisies – Daisies are a cheerful and bright choice, and are often thought to symbolise innocence and purity. Here in the UK daisies tend to be seen flowering in the wild from late Spring and thoughout the summer, but they often form part of Mother’s Day arrangements where they have been commercially grown.

Orchids – An elegant and exotic choice, Orchids have increased in popularity over recent years with their regal stems that feature stunning, long-lasting flowers mimicking strength and beauty. Providing care instructions are followed, Orchids can last far beyond Mother’s Day weekend making an excellent gift that will continue to provide pleasure for an extended period.

Other Recommended Choices

Whilst the flowers above may be the most popular choices, we also recommend a number of other flowers that are great for Mother’s Day flower arrangements or even by themselves.

Peonies – Peonies are lush and beautiful flowers that bloom in the spring. Most have stunningly large flower heads and an amazing scent.

Hyacinths – Another flower with a very sweet-smelling aroma is the lovely hyacinth. They come in a range of colours, typically pink, blue or white that can be grown from bulbs indoors or outdoors depending on the variety. Indoor arrangements in a decorative bowl or pot can make a lovely, long lasting gift where space in the home or garden is at a premium.

Iris – Sometimes a little overlooked, iris flowers come in a variety of colours including a brilliant blue with yellow streaks commonly found in the UK. Often associated with wisdom, courage, and admiration they make a great choice for a mother who is strong and resilient.

Daffodils – These flowers are the ultimate symbol of British spring time. Available in a range of varieties, their flowers are fairly short lived when cut but add an instant splash of fragrance and colour. A simple bunch of daffodils is typically inexpensive and readily available whilst making a great Mother’s Day gift that Mum is sure to love.
